Dining With Nostalgia

I was feeling nostalgic after a weekend of visiting with our daughter and her boyfriend over the 4th of July holiday.  The house goes quiet again and you are left to reflect and feel nostalgic.

I set the table  for Dan and I and added some items of sentiment.

Infuse With Liz
I started this setting by using these golden yellow colored placemats (they remind me of the petals of Black Eyed Susans) to pic up on the bottom edge of the tablecloth, but I wanted another color in the mix.

I chose green!  I wanted the table to have that summer feel.

I spotted these dishes at T.J. Maxx a few months ago and found them hard to resist.  I sway back and forth between loving French and Italian accents.  I chose the white napkins to work with the other white elements in the tablescape and the napkin rings are from Pier 1, 2 years ago.  The white dishes were from Home Goods, "Palm Restaurant" bone china.  I wish I had bought more- very nice quality.

The framed picture is a gift from our daughter.  She recently spent a few days on Mackinac Island and bought this for us.

Michigan artist Kathleen Chaney Fritz  paints wonderful scenes of various places in Michigan.  There is a whole series of pictures she's done on Mackinac Island.  We were all together there in 2012 when our son, his wife, her parents and brother visited with us.
I decided to include this picture for nostalgic reasons.

Infuse With Liz
I found the candle during the last visit when Chelsea and Greg were home.  We toured the Leelanau County region and I found this at a boutique shop.  I've been enjoying it a lot and have nearly exhausted the candle!  The scent has delicate hints of pine in it.  Definitely reminds you of a walk through the woods!

I borrowed the rooster from my kitchen windowsill- I needed something for height.  I would have loved to use my shasta daisies but they're not quite open yet.  The food was served on the empty side which was a collection of left-overs from the weekend.

  1. Your table setting is lovely.

I am going with nostalgia on my mantel today - dug out all sorts of old games which make me think of summer.

  4. Liz, your table setting makes a lovely spot for dinner. You and Dan can recall the fun weekend you shared with your daughter.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment about our sun porch. It's where we spend much time.

  5. It's always nice when you can sit back and remember good times with friends and family. We're going to see our family soon and I know that afterwards I will feel VERY nostalgic for those special vacations spent at the beach together. Priceless. Love the picture your daughter gave you.

  8. While it is always nice to get back to your own routine after a family visit, I totally get the nostalgic part. Your table, however, is perfect for sitting with the hubby and fondly remembering.

  10. Hi Liz, I love everything about your table, and I agree with Patti that the Mackenzie-Child's Flower Market would look great with those dishes.

  12. Hi Liz, what a wonderful setting. I love the large buffalo checks of your tablecloth. Gorgeous green plates. What a perfect spot to enjoy dinner for two and talk about the visit you've enjoyed with family. It is nostalgic when they leave bit so nice to have your sweet memories! Love the little framed print too.
    Have a nice weekend.

  13. Liz,
    Gorgeous tablescape, dear friend!
The bold check with the yellow place mats is stunning!!!
I'll be on the "l00k~0ut" for those dinner plates next trip to the bigger city!!!
I'm a little bit Italian (truly) and a little bit Country French with my kitchen decor, too!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  14. Yes, yes, and yes again!!! I love how you picked up on that band on the hem of the tablecloth! That was right on time!!! It looks great! Bringing the green in was a terrific move, too, since it's on that part of the color wheel that makes it work!!!

I know you really enjoyed that trek to Mackinac Island a couple of years ago, and it's neat that you incorporated parts of those memories as well as others that remind you of good times past.
