Watering Can Planter and Mod Podge!

What a glorious summer day we're having today.  It's in the low 70's, low humidity, and sunny.... can you ask for any better weather than that!

I've had this watering can planter for several years but I never liked it much because it was just too shiny and boring.  I thought about it a bunch and decided I'd try a little Mod Podge project with it.
I had this wide roll of burlap that I decided to
apply to it.  My goal was to give it a little more
rustic appearance.

This turned out to be a stinker because the top is wider than the bottom and I had to fuss a lot with the burlap to get it to lay flat, which involved a few snips here and there.

I added this rope to the top edge and then I decided to wrap the pouring spout with it too (I soaked it in the modge podge before I applied it).  It's not actually a real watering can- it even has holes in the bottom for drainage too.

I put a variety of annuals in it and I added some metal cone flowers and a butterfly for whimsy.  The lobelia will fill out and drape off the edges soon.
I thought about putting a No. 2 on it since that seems to be so popular, but I wasn't convinced that I wouldn't goof it up, so I chickened out!

It's starting to fill out and should be real cute
in a few more weeks!

(P.S.- I discovered after I was done that there is an "outdoor" version of Mod Podge that I probably should have used)

So now I'm off to work on my fairy garden (s).
I've been making some changes there too!

  1. It certainly turned out cute, even if you did have to fuss with it a little bit!

  3. Putting the burlap and rope on your watering can really transformed it in a lovely way. Seems to make the flowers look extra special. I've used the outdoor mod podge on fabric and it makes the fabric feel like oil cloth or leather and it is very pliable. Not sure if I like it either. Haven't tried it on burlap though.

  5. This is such a great idea, Liz! I have a watering can that used to be a pretty shade of green, but it faded over the winter. Lazy me should have brought it in. Anyway, this sure gives me some inspiration to do something with it!

  6. Great job, Liz! The burlap and Mod Podge really did the trick. I didn't know that MP came in an outdoor kind either. Thanks for the tip. I somehow missed your fairy garden, so I'm headed to your garden blog to see what's growing.
